2. Historical Evolution of Forensic Science in IndiaAntiquity: Forensic principles trace back to Kautilya's Arthashastra (~2300 years ago). Indians historically recognized the persistency and individuality of friction ridges (Tarija), utilizing them as biometric signatures.
1849: Inauguration of the first Chemical Examiner’s Laboratory in Madras (subsequently in Calcutta 1853, Agra 1864, Bombay 1870) for toxicological and chemical analysis of biological matrices.
1879: Establishment of the Anthropometric Bureau in Calcutta utilizing Bertillonage.
1897: Establishment of the world's first Fingerprint Bureau in Calcutta. Sir Edward Henry, with mathematical formulations by Khan Bahadur Azizul Huq and subclassification systems by Rai Bahadur Hem Chandra Bose, officially replaced anthropometry with dactyloscopy. India became the first nation to adopt sole dactyloscopic identification.

1952: Inauguration of the first State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) in Kolkata.
